When Pillows Attack
26 August 2008
Lewis Hamilton finished an encouraging 2nd in the European Grand Prix in Valencia but he very nearly missed the race because his pillow had given him a painful neck spasm.
Unless Kimi Raikonen tampered with his pillow Lewis was finding out that picking the right pillow can be very very hard, or maybe he slept on his front, sleeping on your front is a big no no and will inevitably cause neck problems.
We always suggest you take your own pillow away with you especially if you are prone to spasms or a stiff neck but if you don't do not be afraid to ask for more pillows. Or as a last resort use towels to bring your sleep surface up to the height you require.
Picking the right pillow can be a difficult task and there are a couple of different factors that come into it. The width of your back is a big factor, a wide back would require a deeper pillow whike those with a narow back need a shallower one. What you need to achieve is your neck in perfect line with your spine, and this is the case whether you sleep on your side or sleep on your back. For the majority of us 2 pillows should give us the height we need.
In our experience the hardest thing to get right with a pillow is the feel of it. Some people say that sleeping on a memory foam pilow is like manna from heaven while others endure night after sleepless night trying to get used to it. If you like a soft pillow such as a down or feather one make sure you have enough support underneath it to keep your head in perfect line with your spine. If you want a firm pillow we would suggest Silk and for something softer, but with still excellent support we would recommend Alpaca Wool. Our memory foam tip is with memory foam you do really get what you pay for. If you pay £15 for a memory foam pillow do not expect it to have much memory foam in, it will be 95% conventinal foam and may feel hard and unsupportive.
